Picots, Pleats, and Welts with Bristol Ivy

We’ll play with one of the coolest techniques in knitting to create a 3D accent in your projects. Welts, pleats, and picots are each a way to draw your fabric in vertically and add texture and interest to your knitting! Then we’ll discuss ways to use these techniques to spice up future projects!

  • Experience needed: basic knitting, purling, yarnover, and decrease skills, and willingness to be a little adventurous!
  • Materials:
    • 100 yards of worsted weight yarn in two different colors,
    • appropriate needles

Casting-on and Binding-off with Judy Warde

Are the necks of your sweaters and cuffs of your socks too tight? Does your cast-on edge look loose and floppy? Is the first row after the cast-on difficult to knit? Do you have only one cast-on and bind-off in your knitting arsenal? In this class you will learn several ways to cast-on and bind-off so that you can select the one best suited to your project.

    • Light-colored worsted or dk weight yarn and several sets of needles, (Double points are ok because we won’t be casting on many stitches.),

Seeing Mistakes and How to Fix Them with Judy Warde

Did you ever drop a stitch several rows below, skip a stitch, mis-cross that cable, use the wrong color in the colorwork pattern? Don’t be discouraged. All knitters make mistakes. In this class you will learn how to spot common mistakes and others. Bring your mistakes and we’ll figure out how to fix them.

    • small amount of contrasting yarn,
    • tapestry needle,
    • small double point needles,

Sallah Shawl with Bristol Ivy

Published in “Knitty”, Winter 2012, the Sallah Cowl is a great one-skein project that also introduces you to some new and interesting techniques. We’ll work with different sized needles, a reversible fabric, knitting on the bias, and an i-cord edging to create a one of a kind cowl!

  • Materials:
    • 1 skein of variegated sock yarn,
    • 1 US5 circular or straight needle,
    • 1 US10 circular or straight needle,
    • Note: if you own interchangeables, you can put a US5 on one tip and a US10 on the other.

Finishing workshop with Dawn Catanzaro

You put all that time and love into knitting up your sweater, now learn how to give the seaming the attention it deserves. In this class, you’ll learn all the basics of sweater assembly, plus get extra tricks and tips to make the job easier. We’ll cover seaming stitches: side by side, bound off edges together, and the side of a stitch to a bound off edge. You’ll also learn to seam in the two common methods of increase and how to pick up stitches. When we’re finished, you’ll have a mini sweater!

    • 4 swatches in DK or worsted weight (information given at registration),
    • 5 yards of waste yarn (in same weight),

Design Your Own Top Down Shawl with Bristol Ivy

Top down shawls are huge in the knitting world these days, but did you know how easy they were to design yourself? We’ll discuss different shaping options, and then start playing with stitch patterns and charts to find the “sweet spot” where the pattern works perfectly.

  • Experience needed: basic knitting skills, ability to read a knitting chart, and a good sense of spatial relations and logic

    • 600-800 yards of fingering weight yarn,
    • appropriate circular needles

Beginner Sock class with Karen Schilling

Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit socks? If so, this is the class for you! Join Karen for 3 Saturdays in May for this beginner sock class. By the end of this 3 session class you will know everything you will need to know to start on some perfect, portable sock projects for the summer….and a possible head start on those winter gifts!
