Construction-free!!!

Welcome to spring at KnitWit Yarn Shop! The scaffolding on the front of the building is gone (yay!) and we are experiencing (finally!) some sunny and slightly warmer weather. The daffodils are just beginning to think it’s warm enough to open! We have had a lot of fun at the shop, adding some spring-colored yarns and planning a few summer events.

Quince Sparrow

New spring colors of Quince and Co.’s Sparrow yarn are at the shop! I am thinking there are going to be some colorful Dejeuner Bags at the Farmers’ Markets this summer! String Theory just sent us a lovely box of Caper Sock, including some of their new colors. They were thinking spring when they came up with these colors! Crown Cashmere is restocked in an assortment of bright colors – perfect for the Maine spring when you need a light scarf to chase the morning/evening chill.

As for shop news, it’s bittersweet for us to announce that Judy Warde, our Sunday yarn seller/knitting question answerer/ mistake fixer extraordinaire, will be retiring from working Sundays. To thank Judy for all she has done for the shop through the years, we’re having a little get-to-together on Sunday, May 19th, her last day, between 1:00-4:00pm. Stop by to say goodbye and wish Judy well on her next adventure! But don’t worry, Judy will still be teaching classes at the shop so she’ll still be very much a part of our KnitWit family!

Crown Cashmere

Summer we take a break from classes, however we have come up with a few options for knitting fun! We have been super impressed with Amy Herzog’s new book: Knit to Flatter. So we thought it would be fun this summer to do a KTF (Knit to Flatter) KAL! Often times we hear a knitter lament that the finished sweater just didn’t fit right, look right, etc. Amy’s developed a technique to help you successfully knit for yourself! We’re still working on the details but the basics are that we’ll determine our body shape (proportional, top heavy, bottom heavy, etc.) and then pick a sweater/vest/tank top pattern that you want to make. Through discussion as well as leaning heavily on the Knit to Flatter beginning chapters, we will learn how to adjust the pattern to flatter our own unique-ness! No requirements, just the desire to learn how to knit a garment to flatter yourself! Please note this event has been rescheduled from June 8 to June 15 (details below)

Another summer event we are excited about is our “Clean Slate Program.” Summer is a great chance to finish up all of those pesky UFOs so by the end of the summer you are ready to dig into a new fall project. The Clean Slate Program will be held every Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00 pm this summer (starting after Memorial Day) and it will be your chance to get help on seaming and other problem solving which has prevented you from finishing those projects. More details can be found below.

I have put my winter parka away, once again – this time I hope for at least 6 months!! Have a wonderful start to spring.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 15th, 1-3PM! Amy Herzog, author of Knit to Flatter,

will be here to help us kick off our unique summer “KTF (Knit to Flatter) KAL“. Stop by on June 15th to meet Amy and perhaps even pick up a signed copy of her book! More details about the event and the KTF KAL to come later this month!

The Clean Slate Program with Dawn Catanzaro

Bring in your unfinished winter projects and Dawn will help you with seaming and other problem solving so that you can start the fall with a clean slate!

Dates: Every Wednesday from May 29th-Aug 28th from 5:00-7:00 pm

Drop-in Fee: $10 per session

Registration: please call or email the shop by the Saturday before the following Wednesday session (so for the first session on May 29^th, please register by May 25^th)

KnitWit Event: Yarn Tasting on Sat. March 23

What’s a yarn tasting you ask? Well, imagine a wine tasting but replace the wine with yarn! It’s your chance to have a “taste” of different kinds of yarns from New England hand-dyer Dirty Water Dyeworks. Stephanie will bring “tastings” of some of her other yarns in all of her colorways — this is your chance to talk with her and try out her yarns. See the new colors, swatch them up for yourself, and have fun playing around with her beautiful yarns!

Dirty Water Dyeworks is a New England hand-dyer who creates beautiful, nearly solid and subtly variegated colorways. We’ve been carrying their Edna yarn, a lovely Polwarth wool/silk blend in a DK-weight. In fact, I’m currently knitting up my Vodka Lemonade Cardigan with it!
